A popular question I get asked a lot is how I maintain strong relationships with my girlfriends. Once you get married, have babies, expand your career, etc… it seems to get more and more difficult to make time for the important friends in your life who you’ve had for years. is one of the first gal pals I made when I moved to Los Angeles and after 10 years, we still remain very near and dear. On a recent trip to my favorite lunch spot in the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, and I toasted to our long lasting friendship and came up with a list of 8 tips we think make it work.
1. Make a Plan
Ashley and I will always map out when we are going to see each other sometimes months in advance. No matter what, we stick to the plan and do our best not to cancel. This helps to build accountability and set a routine. We do not put pressure on each other to hang out more than our schedule will permit. So when the date finally rolls around, I am beyond excited to catch up.
2. Follow Up
If your girlfriend shares an important Dr’s appointment, family event or special date that she is looking forward to, set a reminder in your calendar to send her a sweet text to let her know you are thinking of her. I have birthday’s, anniversaries and all sorts of reminders on my calendar so I do not forget special moments in my friends lives.
3. Be social on social
When you can’t be arm and arm with your best friends every day of the week, use social media to your advantage. Leave supporting comments and engage on their social media channels to help tie over communication until the next time you are together.
4. Don’t sweat it
Don’t sweat over small insignificant things. After college it felt like my friends and I started to grow apart. Tiny things like not texting on a birthday really shouldn’t make or break your friendship at this point. Just keep in mind that people’s lives get very busy and if you are hurt by something your friend does the best thing you can do is to be upfront, honest, and move on.
